White House support for Pinochet RAE ARGENTINA TO THE WORLD

US lawmakers want Washington to apologize for Chilean coup

U.S. lawmakers want Washington to apologize for its involvement in the 1973 coup d'état in Chile.

The resolution is promoted by Congressmen Bernie Sanders, independent, and Democrats Tim Kaine, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Joaquín Castro and Greg Casar.

They seek that the U.S. government formally recognize the contribution it made to the overthrow of Chilean President Salvador Allende.

It also urges the White House to declassify more documents on American support for the military uprising led by the late dictator Augusto Pinochet.

In presenting their motion, the congresspeople expressed "deep regret for the U.S. role in the destabilization of Chile's political institutions."
