The America Cup arrives in Brazil amid warnings of COVID third wave

The Brazilian Ministry of Health predicts a third wave will be hitting the country around mid-June, exactly when the Copa América begins, which will be held again in Brazil, the second country in deaths and third in cases of COVID-19 in the world.

The appointment of the country as host of the tournament comes as President Jair Bolsonaro's popularity is at its lowest. On Saturday, thousands marched in protest of his government's handling of the pandemic. Demonstrators demanded his resignation or impeachment.

According to Brazilian media, the offer made by Brazil to CONMEBOL (South America's top football authority) comes in recognition of the good experience of the 2019 edition held also in Brazil, which was won by the locals over Peru. There was agreement also about having the final -again- at the legendary Maracaná stadium in Rio.

Rio de Janeiro is the second city in deaths by COVID-19 and is also where vaccination is most advanced. This past Monday immunization began for people between 18 and 59 without underlying health conditions.

The choice of Brazil follows the withdrawal of the two countries that were scheduled to host the competition: Argentina and Colombia. Copa America was originally going to take place in 2020 but was suspended because of COVID 19.
