Foreign Ministry launches identity restoration campaign

Last March 24, the Argentine Foreign Ministry launched the International Campaign for the Right to Identity, as the country commemorated the 45th anniversary of the 1976 Coup D' Etat. This campaign aims to search for people who were snatched as babies or infants during the last dictatorship, between 1976 and 1983, and who now, in their early 40s, may be living abroad.

The campaign was designed jointly with the National Commission for the Right to Identity (CoNaDI) and the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo HHRR groups, that contributed in producing content and in training embassies personnel. The campaign visuals are based on a drawing donated by artist Hernán Cappelletti, "el Cape".

Under the slogan "Argentina is looking for you", the initiative aims to encourage those Argentines living abroad that may have doubts about their true identity (or that of someone they know) to contact Argentine consulates around the world for advice. The identity of around 350 people whose families are still searching for them has yet to be established.

This is the first time that a global outreach campaign has been carried out for this purpose.. All content for social media has been written in five languages: English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and French.

The Ministry informed that in this way the Argentine State takes another step towards guaranteeing the right to identity, and deepens the support of the search carried out by the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo and the families to recover those babies and children, now adults, who are unaware they are still living under fake identities.
