Ecuador elected centre-right candidate Ernesto Lasso as new president

The candidate of the centre-right CREO movement and ally of the Christian Social Party, Guillermo Lasso, won the presidential run-off in Ecuador on Sunday with more than 52 percent of the vote. After an accusation-plagued campaign, ballot day was peaceful and without problems in the end.

"This is a historic day in which all Ecuadorians have expressed with their vote the need for change and the desire for better days for all," said the winner. Mr. Lasso, defeated former president Rafael Correa's protegé Andrés Arauz in the run-off.

Lasso will be sworn in on 24 May and will not have an easy task: a fierce social crisis due to the pandemic, and an increasingly destroyed economy.
