Alarm in Argentina over COVID infections surge

The Forum of Argentinean Scientific Societies, Civil Society Organisations and Public Universities endorsed the communiqué issued by representatives of the public, private and social security health sectors, which warned of the "skyrocketing increase in the number of cases" and urged more strict measures be taken to prevent a further spread.

With this joint communiqué, sectors called the whole of society for "solidarity and responsibility", as well as to "avoid as much as possible going out and contacting other people". They also called for "maintaining social distance, the proper use of face masks, frequent hand washing and ensuring proper ventilation of rooms".

"In this context, mass compliance with these measures adopted by the national government is the only way to control this dramatic situation and avoid a collapse of the health system," they said.

As of Sunday 11 April, a total of 2,532,562 infected patients and 57,779 deaths were officially registered in the country. A peak of 25,000 daily infections was reached on 9 April, and Argentina is now among the 10 countries with the highest number of people affected.
