Quito inaugurates its subway system

Ecuadorian capital Quito joins the list of cities in the world that have a subway as a public transportation option.

On Friday, a network of 15 stations was inaugurated, the first in the country, after a decade under construction.

It covers 22 kilometers between the north and south of the city and "is the most modern in Latin America", according to the mayor of Quito, Pabel Muñoz.

The subway is operated by French company Transdev and Colombian firm Metro de Medellín and required an investment of 2 billion dollars.

Several cities congratulated Quito on the inauguration, among them Buenos Aires, which has the oldest subway in Latin America, inaugurated in 1912.
